The city of Shymkent in southern Kazakhstan will get some much needed improvements to its water and wastewater services thanks to the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). The EBRD has agreed to make an USD 8 million loan to Vodnye Resursy Marketing, a privately owned Kazakh water utility.
With a population of nearly 550,000, Shymkent is the nation’s fourth largest city. The EBRD loan will help make improvements in the city’s efficiency and quality of water service, modernize the water network, make needed replacements to parts of the sewage system, and provide for the installation of frequency controllers.
TOO Vodnye Resursy Marketing
Vodnye Resursy Marketing provides water and wastewater services in most areas of Shymkent and its suburbs, servicing both residential and industrial customers. The company has been working toward the introduction of a commercial water service as well as the introduction of a metering system. Due to the age and condition of the city’s water system, most of the company’s activities are tied to dealing with leaks and replacing aged and broken pipes.
